For some, the term public art is new. For others, they have heard about it but don’t really understand it or appreciate its meaning.
What Is Public Art?
Public art is not a specific category of art but can be art in any form. However, what makes it different is the word “public.” This signifies that the art has been created for the general public to utilize and enjoy. As such, it covers a broad spectrum of different types of art forms. Most people are subjected to public art every day but don’t realize it.
Art Features
This art has its own unique features such as:
- To be classed as public art, it has to meet specific criteria. It must be created specifically for the public.
- It is often on public property but can also be found elsewhere.
- It has a form and usually a theme.
- It is one of a kind.
- It has longevity.
Although art genres like graffiti are often seen in public settings, these are not considered public art. Simply because there is no official activity attached to it. Most often, public art has been funded by the public. For example, a community may come together to support a monument that depicts their community.

- New genre.
- Curated.
Opinions
Most would think that public art would be readily accepted by everyone. However, there are times where a piece of this art can become part of a controversy. For example, some may feel that the piece is unfitting for its location or unappealing.
Then there is artwork such as this that may interfere with the public setting. The art piece may signify something that creates discord through public opinion.
In most cases, public art enhances the environment where it is situated. It plays an important role in signifying something even though it may be no more than for appearances.
