In turn, much of the work in these fields has drawn on computational (and neurological) accounts of mind and memory to explain how information-processing activities shape the ways in which we understand ourselves and our social worlds. As noted earlier, the C-I model also embraces the legacy of cognitivebehavior modification.

Greenberg, Rice, & Elliot, 1993; Greenberg & Safran, 1987). In this vein, at a point when Casey seems to be feeling sad, but also backing off from those feelings, her social worker may proceed along the lines of commenting on Casey's reluctance to "feel sorry," letting her know that feeling sad and sorrowful is a signal that one needs contact and comfort. "It's probably been a while since you felt you had someone to turn to for support. " The social worker's idea here is to prompt Casey to allow her sad feelings, but importantly, to assist her in following the inclination to find connection and comfort.

This chapter and the two that follow are meant to provide more in-depth descriptions of these latter, memory-based contributions to meanings. To account for all the different levels, contents, and qualities of what we know, theorists have organized memory into a number of interacting systems and subsytems (Schacter, cited in Hall, 1998, p. 29). The result is a lot of different ways of carving up memory and a fair amount of confusion about how to put various descriptions and categories together.
