Butterfly enters, shouting “he’s here, he’s here,” childishly suspecting that Pinkerton is hiding and playing a game with her. But as Butterfly searches in vain, she notices a woman in the garden: the woman is Kate Pinkerton. All are silent. Reality overcomes Butterfly. ” No one answers. Then her faithful Suzuki’s tears reveal to Butterfly the bitter truth. Butterfly’s intuitive suspicions are now transformed into the horrible realization of her awful fate. Butterfly asks Suzuki if Pinkerton is alive, and Suzuki confirms that he is.

With obedient resignation, she resolves to obey their wishes. Madama Butterfly Page 31 With a pathetic sense of dignity, she decides to yield. The piercing, thundering dissonance of Puccini’s last chords create an effect of numbness; the chords leave one traumatized with a sense of outrage, pity, sympathy, compassion, and indignation.
