Once there is a vee in the bottom of the hull, the lift generated is deflected sideways. That provides the cushion but is not so good for lift. This is the dilemma that faces powerboat designers and these days we are seeing many of them taking the easy option of having a low deadrise so that they can improve the top speed with the same engine power. A deadrise of, say, 10 degrees will be pretty efficient as far as generating lift is concerned, but you will end up with a harsher ride in waves. Remember that you will rarely operate your boat at full speed, so efficient performance may not be as important as many builders would have us believe.
It can be tempting when operating in a head sea to pull the throttle right back when encountering a larger wave, but this action is likely to reduce your freedom to accelerate quickly afterwards and you can find the boat wallowing as the engine tries to pick up speed. Short, sharp movements of the throttle should be enough to raise or lower the bow without too much loss of speed and this is the way to drive a fast boat if you are having to use the throttle in waves. Surface propellers can be slower to accelerate than those fully submerged, partly because they usually have a high pitch but also because air is drawn into the propeller, which can slow down the time to when it 'bites' again.
The spray rails and chines that are a feature of deep vee hulls are fitted to fine-tune the boat’s performance. There are many variations in their design and an understanding of how they work will give a better appreciation of the merits of various hull designs. The straightforward deep vee, where the smooth bottom panels meet the topsides, would work but it could lack stability. To improve the design, the chine was introduced at the point where the bottom meets the topsides; the angled bottom panels flatten out into a narrow horizontal strip at the meeting point.
